When it comes to effectively utilizing social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, so many people are still not getting the bigger picture. You can venture to any of these sites and see that they are littered with blatant pitch after pitch for products, services, and opportunities. This is literally the equivalent of showing up at a party wearing a t-shirt that says “Make money now – ask me how” and handing out business cards to everyone you see; before you have even been introduced. Now just out of sheer numbers, it is possible you could make a sale or two, but there is a much better way. One that wont have everyone blocking your posts, or immediately un-following you, or kicking you out of the party.

If you analyze the most successful people in social media today, they are not there because they are offering a great product or inviting people to join an amazing opportunity. They are simply there because they engage their audience by making interesting posts, providing informative articles and videos, and creating real value for their followers. They take the time to communicate and provide helpful tips and solutions to problems, without the expectation of monetary gain. And the reward for this generosity… PROSPERITY!

I am sharing this with you today because shamefully, I was once one of those “other guys” who thought the fast track to prosperity online was to blast my message out to as many people as possible, through whatever medium I could access. I was able to make money doing it, but found that I had to continue to regenerate a new following and continuously find new people to target. I found that the “blatant pitch” methods only work temporarily, then you have to retool and start again. A few years ago, after watching others who started marketing online well after me, excel right past my level of success, I finally got it. I then stopped pitching and began providing real value to my followers, and everything changed.

Building real relationships online can initially take a bit longer to show results, but once you begin to really make those connections, and properly setup your marketing funnel, it becomes an unstoppable machine. Your relationships and your business can begin to grow beyond what you thought was possible. You can certainly get your marketing message across, but when you do it the right way, with people you have build relationships with, it becomes so much more effective. The mistake that so many make is that they are trying to make money directly from social media sites before building the relationships. It’s called “Social Media”, not “Sales Media”, however, it can be a tremendous tool to drive sales when done through relationships.

So, how do you build relationship on social media sites?… Do exactly what the most successful social media gurus do… provide valuable and interesting content, helpful tips, videos, etc., without the expectation of monetary gain. The sales, leads, and business partners will all come naturally if you follow this strategy. You will need to make sure you have an effective sales funnel in place to capture your visitors and continue to build those important relationships. I recommend using a blog since it is easy to setup, extremely flexible, and provides many advantages. For details on effectively setting up a blog as your sales funnel, grab a copy of my Social Media Blueprint course.

I will leave you with one important message to sum everything up… People connect with people, not ads, not commercials, not businesses, …but real people.

    Loved the post, Jon.

Building relationships are the key. And they are so much fun, too :) We as humans value relationships more than anything. They are always at the top of our lists. Being able to do them now on the internet with people around the whole world is just incredible.

    Hi Damien,

I agree it is often difficult to tune out the noise to effectively communicate. Twitter especially.

    Thanks for the comment.
